Biomedical waste and environmental safety

Hospital practices

  • Segregation at the point of generation using designated containers.
  • Sharps handling designed to reduce injury and unauthorized reuse.
  • Controlled internal collection and temporary storage.
  • Handover through authorized biomedical-waste channels.
  • Staff instruction, protective equipment and incident reporting.

For patients and visitors

Please do not place dressings, needles, medicine containers or other clinical waste in general bins. Ask a staff member to identify the correct disposal point. Never attempt to retrieve an item from a biomedical-waste container.

Need current records?

Current authorizations, collection arrangements and statutory records should be requested from hospital administration because these documents and reporting periods may change.
